This was one of my very first reads when I first became a teacher back in 1998. Bertherat also believes pain and tension can live in a body "unexamined". That vessel, a haunted house, needs to be awakened. She addresses dissociation of the body and the self awareness to return to it. I had one of her quotes on my first business card: "When you live in your body, you give body to your life." Her book is filled with beautiful metaphor, including her own "anti exercises" to embody your body.
